i felt like i need some more work with vectors and did this from a picture of a swallowtail i took a couple of years ago.
it's another compound path piece with parts of the path cut out of the wings. i found this quite difficult.
i stroked each path and then applied a preset layer style comprising a gradient and bevel.
the yellowish parts of the wings have a gradient applied to which i added noise and then filter>stained glass with the cell size set very small.
i confess that to make the holes in the darker part of the wing, i used a layer mask on the filled path over a layer comprising a copy of the original butterfly on which i'd used the stained glass filter with the cells much larger.
i was simply too tired to cut out the holes with the path tool and it didn't really seem sensal or reasonal when i had the option of using a mask.
